I've been on Christine 's Christmas card list for four years now, and it's a wonderful ride. In the spirit of giving, I'm going to share my good fortune with all of you. Christine, could you give the people some background on this collection? Thanks!

"2002. Barney Smith is a toilet seat artist just outside of San Antonio, TX. It's an impressive collection — many seats have generic themes (a sport, a location) but there were other seats that commented on subjects in ways that gave me chills, like his seat about the passing of time. And others would have a bunch of stuff on them, like keys.
"Barney is an amazing person, so kind and full of energy. And also so obsessed with his museum — if I knew what postmodernism felt like, it would have been watching the Today show segment on the Toilet Seat Museum in the Toilet Seat Museum (almost against my will; it was too impolite to say no)."

"2003. This was at an AIDS walk where Brenda Blackman introduced the governor. I really wanted to get a picture with her, but the crowd was OBSESSED, chanting her name, and just generally surrounding her. I hope Penny Crone gets the same reaction when she makes an appearance."
[Fmr. NJ Gov. Jim McGreevey]

"2004. I wish she was my friend. The blonde with the bangs is Rachel Nagy of the Detroit Cobras. They are a really fun band, and Maria and I saw them play in Spain.
Alternate cards that year: Ice-T and Stewart Murdoch from Belle & Sebastian. It was a very good year." |

"2005. I will never top this card. I will never smile that much again. I will never be that excited again. I will never be that close to greatness."
