Head Start

by Lisa Carter

I owe the Head Start program a debt of gratitude. They have made me the strong woman that I am today. Two of my children attended  Westwood Head Start in Inkster, Michigan. As a parent I felt very unsure of myself and also my parenting skills. But I began to volunteer in my youngest child's class and it was there where I met Miss Edith, her teacher. I loved Edith as she made both parents and children feel comfortable, encouraging growth in all of us. I then decided that I wanted to work at Head Start. After being hired in, they paid for my going to college to get my CDA credential. I even got to work with Edith as her assistant. She is truly my "mentor teacher". After I received my CDA, I was hired as a teacher. But something happened.. I came to realize that I liked learning and going to college. I felt good about myself and my family. Today I have a Master of Science and am working on another Master's degree. Head Start made me never want to stop learning. Thank you Head Start, you will always be in my heart.

"Earning two Master's degrees is very impressive. Head Start helps both children and their families. You are living proof of that. Congratulations!"
