Across this nation (and certainly here in our own little Head Start program) a majority of our children come from single-parent households, and nearly all are parented by single moms. True, there may be grandmothers and grandfathers or aunts and uncles who live nearby, but every morning when they get up, and every night when they go to bed, it’s the moms and it’s the kids.

If you’ve ever been a single parent (or if you’ve ever known one), you know it’s anything but easy. There’s more than enough fear, frustration, anger, loneliness, and tears for everybody.
But look at these faces carefully: can you spot a made-up smile in the whole bunch of them? We can’t. And we’ve got a thousand more pictures just like these ... so ...
The next time you think the world has gone somewhere in a handbasket, think again. Try to remember these happy moms and their kids, and think about the thousands of others (almost a million, actually) all across America.
