Every day Phyllis Stewart gets up and heads to Oregon's Eagle Point Head Start center where she greets the scores of children who delight in the arrival of “Grandma Phyllis.” For the past 24 years this 92-year-old mother of five has brought joy, friendship, and love to Head Start children. Phyllis began volunteering in 1982 when she visited her daughter who was working as a cook for the center. Since then she’s volunteered every weekday to encourage youngsters across the monkey bars, tell stories to children who joyfully pile up on her lap, and Phyllis will offer a comforting hug to any child who might need one. Phyllis’s years of service to Head Start children and families are an inspiration to everyone in her community. The National Head Start Association named Phyllis the Humanitarian of the year May 12, 2006, in Detroit, Michigan.
